Photo Identification Requirements to Vote
Indiana law requires residents to present a government-issued photo identification before casting a ballot at the polls on Election Day. Your photo identification must meet all of the following four criteria to be acceptable for voting purposes:
Display your photo; AND
Display your name, and the name must conform to your voter registration record; AND
Display an expiration date and either be current or have expired sometime after the date of the last General Election; AND
Be issued by the State of Indiana or the U.S. government.
If you do not possess an ID that is acceptable for voting purposes, Public Law 109-2005 requires the BMV to issue an Indiana State ID Card for free. To obtain a free ID card for voting purposes from any BMV license branch, you will need to supply the necessary documentation. The required documentation includes:
Proof of Identity: This could be a birth certificate or passport.
Proof of Lawful Status: Documents such as a birth certificate or passport can serve this purpose.
Proof of Social Security Number: Acceptable documents include a Social Security card, pay stub, or W-2 form.
Proof of Indiana Residency (two documents required): Utility bills, bank statements, or lease agreements can be used.
